Blue Rose Dairy - our first trip away from campus

We visited the Blue Rose Dairy in Winlock, Wa on Sunday.  Rhonda Rider and her husband David have been raising goats and making farmstead cheese here for 10 years.  Their herd is now about 85 goats, but they've had as many as 160 at a time.  We heard how cheese is made, saw how the goats are milked, and ... played with the goats and their 'protecters' - 3 HUGE Anatolian Shepherd dogs.  The goats were adorable, and the dogs were as gentle as you could possibly imagine.

We sampled Rhonda's chevre and feta cheeses that she makes from their goat milk.  I like feta, but I loved her plain 'chev' cheese -  like cream cheese.  They sell their cheese to restaurants and at the Olympia, Pike Place, and Proctor District Farmers' Markets.

An interesting point that Rhonda made when we were talking about 'sustainability' - she said they only do things on the farm 'that work'.  My thought was that this is the same thing that nature does - only the things 'that work' persist...
