A day in Cairns - Aboriginal Center & Crocodile Farm

Yesterday we spent the day at the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park in

Cairns, Queensland… The whole park is dedicated to preserving and presenting authentic Aboriginal Culture with the aid of a lot of modern technology. We saw three different shows, first a Dijeridoo playing which is honestly just so amazing!!! Then we went to the history theatre where we listened to a narrator explain thru headphones the history and creation of the Tjapukai tribes beliefs and where they stem from. The last show we watched was the traditional dance show

; we experienced traditional dance, learned about their paint markings, and also learned how the aboriginal people make their fire… Next we all had a shot with spears and boomerangs, I think we did pretty well for first timers. I even bou

ght a boomerang to take home to continue trying to get better; as well as introduce it to my friends and family!!! all very amazing to experience first hand. Lastly we were briefed on the Aboriginal weapons and agriculture… it fascinated me how the woman of the tribes learned and adjusted to work with toxic plants and still found ways to incorporate them into their life. The center had a large gallery of original Aboriginal art work that we all could no keep our eyes off of. It was just absolutely beautiful; mos

t of us will be bringing some home to share! After a short bus trip we arrived at Hartleys Crocodile Farm where we first had lunch (yummm) and then started off on an adventure in the park. We saw the crocodile breeding area, and took a boat tour around their man made swamps… The tour guide fed the crocodiles and it was absolutely amazing to see them reach out of the water, they were just giant! We watched a snake first aid presentation, a crocodile feeding presentation, and even got to feed wallabies!!! My personal favorite part of the Hartleys Crocodile Farm was getting to see Koalas, I have been on a mission to

find them since the minute we landed in Sydney on January 3rd and it is on my bucket list

to pet one… I just love the little guys so much. And boy was I not disappointed; they are just adorable. We got to watch them be fed their eucalyptus leaves and headed back on the bus to Port Douglas… It was a great day followed by a great evening of discussion over dinner with the group about sustainability at PLU and about how we can incorporate it into our daily lives once we get back home! Today we have a free day in Port Douglas and then we head back to Sydney at 3 am tomorrow morning… Cant believe our time down under is already beginning to come to a close! But it has been an amazing adventure
