Our last day full of events was tons of fun! First we went
to the Tjapukai Aboriginal cultural center which was a ton of fun. Their place
was presentation based and very exciting! We first got to see a presentation
introducing the aboriginal cultural center and we got to hear a man play the didgeridoo.
There are many steps to playing a
didgeridoo, which all of us found out when we went into the gift shop and tried
playing it ourselves. They obviously have to have pure talent to be able to play
because none of us sounded even close to the sounds that they had coming out of
a didgeridoo. Our second performance showed us how the world got started
according to an aborigine. The world all got started by an egg and everything
that hatched from it, giving animals to the dry world and the wet world. After this
we went to a performance of their cultural practices and dances they would do. Then
we all got a chance to throw a boomerang and throw a spear using a spear thrower. That was
very interesting, and you really got to put a lot of hook in your throw for a
boomerang. After this our final stop was to show us the kinds of fruit that
they eat and told us that the men would hunt while women gathered vegetation and
cooked.
Our next stop was Hartley’s Crocodile Farm which was pretty
interesting to see all the crocodiles. I’ve never seen one so up close! They showed
us their farming section which made me feel a little bad that the crocodiles
were kind of put up in a naturalish looking environment. But this is like most
animals farmed, they live in horrible conditions. After this we got to look around
at the zoo a little. We went to a snake and crocodile show and go to see some
of the people working at the zoo feed and show us the death roll that a
crocodile does when they latch onto food. Those boys were crazy risking their
lives like that, I don’t think I could ever do something like that. We went on
a boat tour around the swamp area where we got to see a bunch of crocodile
swimming right next to our boat and our tour guide fed some of them. It was
pretty scary to see a crocodile that close up. And I’m sure if he had it in him
he could of tipped our boat, but I tried not thinking of that. I did get to feed a Cassowary bird which was
pretty cool! Like Callie said, it looks like the bird from the movie Up. So that
was pretty cool, and on top of that I was able to pet a Koala Bear! I think it
was on everyone’s list of must dos while in Australia and most of us, if not
all got to!
I’m excited for my free day here in Port Douglas, Janet and
I are planning on going up the gondola, through the rain forest and get to stop
at the top of a mountain, at a waterfall, and in a small city. We are both very excited and on
top of that we are renting a car and get to practice driving on the opposite
side of the road. Now that will be interesting! And in Sydney we plan so far on
finishing up shopping and eating at our favorite lunch spot right on the
waterfront out looking the circular quay. I’m very excited for that delicious
meal! Sad that we have to leave, but I am really excited to get back to see my
family to tell them all about it.
