Our last half of the eco village was amazing! We got to help
and give back to Max by cleaning up and helping around his garden. Doing this
gave us all an example of permaculture and gardening in your own yard to help
sustain yourself. I helped with moving the chicken coop by emptying out their
cage and getting to play with the chickens for a bit. I actually had one in my
hands then he pressed off my arm with his leg and got loose! Darn! I also
helped with pulling weeds and finding really cool insects. They have
grasshoppers that are bright yellow and yellow lady bugs with black spots!
On our last day at the eco village we got to tour Barry
Goodman’s house which was a treat! It was very strategically built so that it
fit what Barry wanted in a home, but also had the environment in mind. He chose
the make his home one room thick so that he never had a bad room; each room saw
out every side of his house. He uses composting toilets which he admits that he
is not good at checking. I thought it was very cool because many of the dishes
he had were pottery made by a local artist. So I had fun checking out all his
cups and bowls. He also has vents up high on his ceiling so that when warm air
rises, it can go out of his house so he does a good job at finding energy efficient
ways to cool his house. We all thought his tub was especially cool because it
was wooden. Most of the materials that he made his house out of were recycled.
His windows were all from old phone booths that were to be thrown away but he
bought them off the company for cheap and used them for his house. We also got
to see the garden which was very neat how many vegetables he grew there and was
quite large. It’s a good thing he has his son’s help because he would probably
be stuck there forever.
We also got to try kangaroo. That was interesting but good,
reminded me of stew. Our hosts were so wonderful and fed us heartedly, it felt
like I was back at home. Max was right about the dessert though because the
tiramisu was the best dessert ever!
